Origins of Doha and Qatar Project

The Origins of Doha and Qatar Project was directed by Professor Robert Carter (UCL Qatar) and explored the foundation and historic growth of Doha and other coastal cities through a combination of archaeological investigation, historical research and oral testimony. The project applied detailed analytical techniques to the archaeological record of Doha, Bidda’, Fuwairit, and other settlements according to current best practice in archaeological research.

Over six years an extensive program of archaeological excavation and building recording was carried out with the aim of tracing and understanding of the changing physical extent and urban configuration of coastal cities in Qatar through time, using historic maps, aerial photographs, the recording of build heritage and the excavation of archaeological deposits.
